Season 3 Episode 41 – Thank You for the (Negative) Feedback

Date

“One of the core strategies for building trust is giving and receiving negative assessments. And for many of us, that alone occurs as a threat.”

Feedback. Many of us cringe at even the thought of giving it—let alone receiving it. But navigating feedback is an absolutely critical skill for maintaining the health of our relationships and our organizations. When we sit on our feedback and refuse to share it, we sow the seeds of distrust. In this episode, Kari and Paul show how we can develop our capacity for giving and receiving feedback so that we actually look forward to those conversations as opportunities for alignment and co-creation.

In This Episode:

0:42 — The “superpower” that is feedback

2:20 — What is standing in the way of giving feedback?

3:50 — “Cordial Hypocrisy” revisited

Quotes:

“The ability to have any conversation with anyone in any circumstance provides extraordinary power, trust, freedom and resilience.”

“Most people harbor negative assessments of each other. Resentment builds, and they enter into a cycle of distrust.”

“There is so much fear in having real, authentic, vulnerable dialogue with others. Why? Because we don’t know how to do it. And we anticipate bad outcomes because we don’t trust others to receive it!”

“One of the core strategies for building trust is giving and receiving negative assessments. And for many of us, that alone occurs as a threat.”
